Needless to say, both the Nikon and Olympus are fine products. The decision would come down to which one is right for me. I had the fortune of using both cameras in the field to aid in development my decision. If I could afford it I would chose both. Unfortunately for me that is not an option.
Olympus
Like most amateur photographers my style is to be as creative as I can be and learn from both my successes and mistakes. I sometimes use things that I learned by development mistakes. The Olympus e30 seemed to give me the creativity that I was finding for. I was very impressed by the filtering system. The filters greatly enhanced the moods of the captured image. At this time I was unavoidable that the Olympus e30 would blow the Nikon away.
As it turns out, I was wrong. In fact, the Nikon d90 has a more elucidate filtering law than the Olympus. The Nikon is also the first camera to have a Dslr movie mode. This mode allow you to take short movie clips of 720p Hdtv of Hdmi output, and easy to use navigation. There is even a function that acts as an instructional hand-operated while you are using the camera. Nikon understands that cameras have features that most users never use and might forget that they are there if not for the on screen manual.
The Olympus e30 has face detection technology that, for me, is a deal breaker. The firm has taken this technology to the next level. Equilibrium of subjects in the foreground and the landscape in the background are fully controlled by the user.
Another highlight that I like in the Nikon d90 was the Auto Graduation function. This function allows the user to avoid blocked-in shadows and blown highlights. This is a extraordinary highlight because the highlight that you blow might be your best shot. This is especially true for amateur photographers.
Not to be out done, the Nikon d90 has extraordinary attractions too. The camera has a Cmos sensor that allows the creation of D300 quality output that is as high as Iso 6400. In addition, the camera has a modified shutter, and 3D tracking Af.
My personal choice was the Olympus e30 although I also like the Nikon d90. I based my final decision on focus speed. The Nikon d90 lost out when it came to color, sharpness, and details of the photos.
